Last Friday, AOL featured a story about a dispute between the state of Texas and the parents of a twelve-year-old girl. AOL’s on-line poll showed that 67% of respondents sided with the parents against the state.
Here’s the background. Twelve-year-old Katie Wernicke was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease last January. She has been treated with chemotherapy, and now with radiation therapy. The state seized custody of Katie from her parents when it came to light that they were barring doctors from continuing the radiation therapy. (But why did they also seize her three brothers?)
Several questions come to mind. First, why do advocates for fathers and children care? Who is right in this case, the state of Texas or the parents? And what do the poll results tell us? ...
