[New York's highest court judge says that divorce leaves men with short end of stick, but Ontario higher court supports sole custody to the mom where there's high conflict.

New York State Judge Robert Smith suggested recently that divorce leaves men with the short end of the stick. What’s more, he isn’t just any judge, he sits on New York’s highest court, called the Court of Appeals, equivalent to our Supreme Judicial Court in Massachusetts.
Moreover, his comments were not an off-the-cuff slip. They were made last Thursday in a planned speech to the Family Law Section of the New York State Bar Association. The only part he forgot to mention is how badly children are being hurt by the biased actions of family courts.
“One sparrow does not spring make,” . . . but it’s a start.

Meanwhile, from Ontario, Canada, comes a higher court decision that is guaranteed to reward mothers for creating bitter conflicts during divorce. As usual, the victims will be the children.
In this decision, the Ontario Court of Appeal overturned a lower court decision that had given joint custody to Patricia and George Kaplanis.
On the surface, this decision seems reasonable. After all, Patricia and George could not have a conversation without shouting. What could be more harmful to a child than to put her between parents at war?
